Newbie...please bare with me. I have acquired a boat with a 1988 johnson 88 spl. I was told the motor runs but had not been started in over a year. So....what ive done is pull the fuel tank, drain it, clean it, new fuel lines. Have both carbs off and two rebuild kits. I believe I have the rebuild complete however there are many peices left in the rebuild kit. Rebuild kit is from west marine. Its a sierra rebuild #18-7046. I completely disassembled and replaced needle valve seat and oring, needle valve, and all the other good stuff. Anyway on the diagram that came with the rebuild kit it shows an idle jet located on the side of the carb underneath the idle return spring. It show a plug (slotted screw) to take out and clean the jet. However mine does not have this screw. It has a peice of lead and according to the diagram at http://shop2.evinrude.com/Index.aspx?s1=e9825573130a9e0c619f256db6bad10a&catalog_id=0&siteid=1 (at this link click on johnson, 1988, 88 hp, carburetor...) Its number 5 on the diagram. Do I need to do anything to this lead shot as far as taking it out? Is there an actual idle jet behind this lead shot?

Question 2: what is involved in "link and sync" is this something I can do or do i have to take it to the shop? also in the rebuild kit there was an L shaped ruler....what is this for?

You shouldn't need to remove any lead shot to overhaul your carbs, no jets behind them. The sierra kits are made to work on different carbs, there are usually parts left over.
You need to use the manual to do a "link and sync", several steps involved.
The L shaped ruller is for measuring the float levels of your carb.

ok great thanks. no manual yet but plan to order one. How much in general would a shop charge just to link and sync? Or can anyone find a link with instructions? thanks for the quick reply
