We'll my outboard is extremely hard to start. when i do get it started it will only stay running when at high RPM. (high RPM obtained by opening up flaps on carb with connecting linkage rod) Do I have a broken Reed valve(s)???? or stuck float(s)??

woodshole.....How long has it been since you cleaned and rebuilt those carbs? I would start there. Good Luck.

compression check?? I know how to do it but just curious why? the carbs have probably never been cleaned before. there are a lot of hours on this engine.

Hello
woodshole you ask why? cause its easy cause its imperative to verify mechanical integrity before chasing shadows. any tune up on any internal cobustion articulated rod engine should start with a compression or leakdown test. reeds on modern outboards rarely break. Timing does not jump or slip.most problems are ign and fuel. but rings and pistons do fail.that is why you were asked to perform a compression test before blindly chasing circles
good luck and keep posting
