G'Day From Australia,

I have tried to do everything right, but to no avail. I bought a manual from Fleebay advertised as a genuine OMC manual, but got ripped off. I am planning to do my water pump on boxing day, but cannot get my head around where the shift rod retaining screws are located on my motor. I have read a few posts that say behind the starter motor, but this 2 cent manual says the opposite side. Can anyone give me some idea which side please? I have the rest of the job sussed but I cant seem to find a clear pic of the shift rod.

Cheers
Craig
Merry Christmas To All.

G'Day Craig,
Here is a link that may help you some. There are lots of photos and blurb.
Hope it helps. Let us know.

While that might be helpful with some models, the 1988 90HP motors use a clip (retaining pin) that must be pulled from the shift lever, followed by pushing the shift lever towards the engine from starboard.

do not turn the shift shaft, or it will throw the linkage off.

Hi Again Its Me,

Been in the garage all arvo and think I have managed to confuse myself well and truely......so I walked away before taking to it with a hammer or a gas axe. Question....the pic posted of the shift rod looks different to mine, so I looked on this site and found an exploded diagram of the shift linkage. The question is after looking at the motor, do I disconnect the pin mentioned from the port or starboard side? If its the port side looks like the starter, fuel lines etc have to come out as I cannot see a pin from that side? Can I confirm the pin gets disconnected on the starboard side of the motor?

Cheers

This might help you. Plug your model into it and check the diagrams out. I am heading off to work in a minute or I would look it up myself for you.
The other link does indeed only deal with the bolted shift linkage. I will update with more photos next time I do a different version.

Cheers mate thats where I got the diagram from, but I am still confused which side to get to the clip. Do I need to remove the starter motor to reveal this clip, or undo the clip on the starboard side that I can get to easily? Sorry to be a pain but my OMC manual is due after Chrissy and the seloc show SFA.

The retaining pin is removed from the starboard side. The shift lever is then pushed towards the shift rod/engine/center from the starboard, which releases the shift rod.

Done all of the above, lower leg has dropped about 10cm and no further movement possible. I dropped the pin, push the leaver towards the port side but she still wont release. I have a sneaking suspicion there is a bolt or similar under the carbs that I cant see that needs to be undone, anyone know where and how to get to it please? Thanks Again.

There are several other possible connections that were used in other model years and other horsepower ranges, but the diagrams for the 1988 90HP motors are as described above.

In two alternative V4 possibilities, the shift rod was released by removing screws from either the starboard side of the engine or from the port side.

In either case, the screw would be located near the center bottom of the intake manifold. See the thumbnail for an example of one removed from the starboard side.

Thanks for the reply much appreciated. I cant see in from the port side because of all the fuel lines etc, moved a couple and really cant see anything of note. Looks like the starter etc will have to come out to see if anything gives. Shall get back to it shortly, having a break watching Australia bowl out Pakistan...shall report back if we get anywhere with this bloody motor. Surely it will give upp it's secret today. Cheers

What a b@astard of a job!!!After mucking around for a few hours, and a bit of luck, two screwdriver under the carbs did the trick. Cant wait to try and line the shift rod up on the return journey.

Re: 1988 Johnson 90 HP Lower Unit Removal

Update.......did the job today and the leg went straight back on. After a bit of jigging around with the shift shaft lever to re seat it all was good. Bolted back together without force, dragged her out of the garage and hooked the muffs up and nuthin out of the tell tale. She coughed as she was cold gave her a restart and had a pee stream a man could shower under. Thanks for all your help guys, and after doing this one anyone has the same model give me a yell!! I will be shot for saying this but big Merc's are so much easier but I did learn alot. Cheers From Down Under.
