I am new to the world of outboards. I recently purchased a boat with a 1988 Mercury 115hp 6cyl OB. The week prior to this problem I am about to describe, I made the mistake of running a tank (10 gallons) of 50:1 gas mixed half with 2 cycle chainsaw oil, and half 2 cycle outboard oil. I've since learned that was a mistake, and wont do that again. While using that gas, the motor ran semi-rough at low rpm. The entire tank was used under 1000rpm. I had no problem putting it in gear, and running at the low rpm, and it staying running.
I just filled the tank using Quicksilver plus, 2 cycle marine oil mixed 50:1, no-ethanol 89 octane gas. Took the boat out and now as soon as I put the motor in forward or reverse, it will stall out. I do seem to hear a low and high idle once the engine is started. Sometimes it takes a few seconds for the high idle to kick in, like something might be sticking. If I quickly put the motor in gear and advance the accelerator to just the right spot, the motor will not quit. If I give it a little too much, it will bog down and die. If I make it past this problem, the motor runs just fine, and purrs like a kitten at high rpm. Ideas?? thanks.
