1988 Merc 8hp

I have a 8 hp merc that won't go into reverse. I have taken apart the bottom end and the gears seem fine there was lot's of water when I drained for the fall so I was going to replace the water pump and seals as well as the seal in the gear case housing anyway. I don't have alot of experience with bottom ends but looks pretty straight forward. The clutch seems a little sticky could this cause this ?? The gears do look good

Water causes rust/corrosion.The prop shaft has a shaft in side it that moves back and forth.Possible it's corroded and won't move.The clutch dog could be shot.
Take it apart,you should be able to make everything move by hand.J

Thanks that could be it when I took it apart the pin stayed in I have it soaking in the solvent tank so I will lube and put back together
