I recently tuned up my 1988 Mercruiser 3.0L (new points, plugs, gapped, set timing etc... ) After the tune up i had her running pretty nicely - took her out 4 times with no issues. The only thing i would mention is that once i turned her off and waited a couple of minutes (or longer) to start her back up i had to give her full throttle in order to start (and she would crank for about 5-10 seconds before finally starting). If i turned her off and then right away (5 or 10 seconds later) tried to start her up - she fired up no problem.
Well, the last time out (yesterday) i needed some more gas, so i put in $20 (89 octane Exxon) - she was still hard starting after stopping but at least she was not stalling out - i did start to notice that she was getting a little rougher idle here or there (no major issues on the water though). Well, I got her back on the trailer, brought her home, and when i went to flush her with the hose I could not get her to idle - just stalls. I waited a day until today (figuring maybe a day of rest may do some good) but she still won't idle - simply stalls out. I can get her started by going full throttle - but as soon as i bring her down under 2000 rpms she'll just drop rpm and... you guessed it... stall out. i even tried to get her to stay around 2000 rpm but she wont stay at a consistent idle - she'll eventually start dropping rpm and then stall (unless i give additional throttle to rev her back up).... any ideas on what the problem may be?? could it be the gas i put in? fuel pump? something else?
