It starts fine goes into gear at idle runs fine.
When you push the lever forward it dies. So you can not pick up speed.
It lets you rev the motor in neutral.
What needs ajusting here?

I would suggest that you perform a complete link and sync rather than guess at what particular setting needs adjustment. Each link and sync step is dependent on all previous steps/settings being done correctly. Changing only one setting on a hunch/guess is usually not a good idea as it may only compensate for another bad setting and cause even worse problems.

Having said this, my guess is that the carbs need cleaning.

Get in the habit of performing basic troubleshooting.

Compression test

Spark test

If both are fine then you can be reasonable sure that the fault lies in the fuel system.

Clean those carbs AFTER checking spark and compression.

something going on with the spark advance -possibly in the linkage - when you throttle forward to wot ( engine off ) do the carbs open up with the advance linkage - but quite possibly the trigger has failed you can check it with - if your gonna do the trigger -do the stator as well it wil save you $ in the long run and or a very near future breakdown on the water .

Re: 1988 Mercury Black Max 175 dies

Originally the Stator went. I performed tests on the trigger before I replace the Stator it checked out ok. When I went out it ran great for about 2 miles then when I put it in neutrall it froze up the shifter. My bud messed with the ajustment screws and we crawlled back on idle speed. The metal bracket that keeps the cables from the shifter inplace was off so I placed it back on. Still the same results. So I should do a lync and sync or ajust high spark advance? How is this done?

I got the high spark working so I can now get out of the hole but the low sprark seems off it does not want to idle.
