Are parts of this era generally interchangable? I need a lower unit for my '88 MERC 3 Cyl 90hp motor and someone has an 88 Mariner motor (75hp).... just wanted to know if the lower unit is interchangable. My serial is B37xxxx. No clue what the other serial # is.

Re: 1988 Mercury parts vs. Mariner parts

The Mariner line is/was the export version. If you go to Austrailia and often Canada that's what you'll find instead of Merc. Because of this they are often found with Metric fastners. But... not all of them are Metric and not all of them were sold strictly as exports so not all of them had Metric fastners.

It's really confusing so the only big difference that I can positively identify is that Black Max shaved his beard for the Mariner picture.

Back in the early 80's the V-6 Mariners had the nickname of "Grey Ghosts" and you could by a Grey Confederate General on a horse with Rebel Flag from Mercury to put on your engine.

Re: 1988 Mercury parts vs. Mariner parts

Same general question on parts swapping. Are the Mercury parts more available than the Mariner and are the part numbers the same? I have a part my mechanic is telling me can only be found on a junked motor, the lower bearing on the midsection driveshaft cover-swivel mount on a merc 70 hp. Shock absorbers also are an issue. Serial is 811xxx and a 1981 motor.

Also, is there a hp range that was interchangable? ie 60hp to 90hp?

Thanks in advance

All the big ones are the same, and all the parts are identical except for the decorations.

There's equivalent models, like Merc XR4 and Mariner Mag II are the same.

hope it helps
