1988 Nissan 5hp 2 stroke help

My buddy has a 1988 5hp 2 stroke Nissan outboard motor that has a broken plastic part that he can't find anywhere. I'm not sure about the part number and he has been told by the local dealer that the part is no longer made. The small plastic part is attached to the pull start mechanism and it is somehow attached by a spring. The part is designed to not allow the user to start the engine in gear. Without it the engine will not start. He was going to have the part machined but he only has about 85% of the original piece and he might be missing a spring. Does anybody know anything about this part? Is it true they don't sell the part anymore? Any help would be awesome. Thanks

The recoil starter was redesigned in 1992. The plastic reel from the 1991 and earlier engines went out of production a couple of years ago and that is probably the part your friend is looking for. The new reel will not fit the old housing so he needs to buy a new recoil starter assembly. That part is available from any Nissan or Tohatsu dealer.

I have 5 hp nissan outboard. Can I put a larger carb on it to get more power?

Do you have a 2 or 4 stroke?
