1988 'rude 35 thumps??????

okay so i recently aquired a 1988 evinrude 35 horsepower outboard. it is not a tiller steer. anyway it seems to thump when in going forward. the more you accelerate the throttle the harder, louder and more violent it thumps. The gentlemen i purchased it from had a "newer" used prop on it, but claims to have not run it after that, but the prop seems to be in fine shape visibly. which is what worries me. any ideas guys??? it seems to go fine in reverse though.

is it a thump, like hitting a log under water. if so you have a clutch dog in the lower unit going out. the more you use it the worse it will get.

actually will a lower unit off a 1995 40 horse fit it??? i may be able to get one of those on the cheap...
