I have a 1988 Sea Ray with a 135 hp Mercury outboard. Last year it would start ok but when I put it in gear it would bog down and only go about 8 mph for several minutes. Then it would start "kicking in", like it would get full power for a second or two. Then after several minutes it would finally get full power and I could get 48 mph. I changed plugs, wires, voltage regulator, rectifier, fuel filter, checked for fuel pressure. Nothing has fixed the problem. This year it isn't getting any spark at all, but it is getting fuel. I suspect it is the stator, but how can I check to be sure? The stator number is 5454A35.

I had the same problem with my 1988 mercury 135 hp. I had the stator plus both switch boxes replaced. Works fine now!

It did end up being the stator and both switch boxes. At first I tried replacing just one switch box - the one that was totally dead, but that only gave me half power. I had to replace both boxes. Then the timing had to be adjusted. Now it seems to be fine.

Having the same problem right now.. when you refer to the box replaced are you talking about the power pack?

My boat starts fine but when trying to take off it goes slow and takes about 20sec to get up on a plane then it just comes to life and will run 40mph fine.. The rest of the day it will be fine.. next day had the same problem with take off..

any help will be awesome.. Also I have already replaced one power pack because I was dead on cylinder 3(no Spark)
