I have an 88 seville merc 4.3lx. Just recently the starter is acting up. Turn the key, loud click from the starter solenoid. Been in the starter twice. First time inspection, clean reinstall. Second time, replace solenoid/ brushes/bushings, even tho no obvious problems. Cleaned and refit all primary electrical at the starter, cables grounds etc. After hitting the key about 10 times the starter will engage and turn the motor. Since the solenoid 'clicks', I tend to rule out the ign switch and/or neutral switch. Did searay/merc run multiple solenoids as well? I can't help but feel this is a known issue with this boat/motor combo, and is probably something fairly straight forward to repair. Any Suggestions where to look next?

Welcome to Iboats!

There is normally an assist solenoid in between the ignition switch and the starter solenoid. It is common for the connections there to get corroded or for the solenoid to fail internally.
The "click" you hear could be the assist solenoid trying to engage and not the starter solenoid.
