1988 SunRunner 235 Weekender

I picked this up for under 600.00 10/1/2011. It was prepped and waiting to be launched May 2011 but never was due to the owners unexpected passing. The owner kept all of the original documentation, titles and receipts (Original bill of sale 18,800.00). The maintenance record is good, always stored and maintained at the marina. He even kept a log......
The owners sister had it listed on craigslist "22' boat, needs work, call Kathy". So I drove the two hours to lake Erie after work to take a look...




She has a soft floor on the stern, some electrical challenges, mold, needs cleaned, and in dire need of a good buffing.

I am done with the stringers, bulkheads, and sole! To date the material list from US Composites is;


25 gallons of 435 Polyester resin
20 yards of 1708 Bi-axial cloth
30 yards of 1.5 ounce CSM
15 yards 10 ounce E-Glass
15 yards 8.5 ounce Twill E-Glass
4 gallons Cabosil
10 pounds 1/4" chopped strand
5 quarts 3M Glass Bubbles
4 ounces titanium dioxide (White color in holds)

From other sources;
6 4x8 sheets marine grade plywood- Homestead Hardwoods, Vickery Ohio
6 cases pool noodles- Leslie's Pool Supply
12 boxes of powered latex gloves- wherever they were on sale
3 24-count boxes of 1 quart mixing containers- ACE Hardware
1 500-count box of large tongue depressors- Grainger
6 gallons acetone- Sherwin-Williams
4 grinders and 12 flap wheels- Harbor Freight
and many other little items.......

I have started removing the interior to get an idea of how much plywood, glass and epoxy to order. I also spent the better part of the day polishing the exterior. This is after rubbing compound and a wool pad, I have my work cut out for me.

Sorry, She has a Volvo Penta AQ231b with a 280 out drive. They kept it in Lake Erie all summer and the marina was painting the hull up to the drive. The outdrive is a bit ate up...

Ayuh,.... Cool,... That's way better than an OMC driveline....

If that's the trailer for it, ya need to move the axles further aft....

The trailer work is slated to be done next summer. The way she sits now the bow is not touching the winch mast nor the keel touching the rollers. The marina has the boat balanced over the axels, I can lift the tung with one hand, and the bunks are adjusted all the way up. I get the idea they sat it this way to make it easy to sling.

The axels are Dexters with a #42 spindle and the brakes are bolted to a backing plate, not welded on. I am planing on changing the hubs, brakes, wheels and tires.

Should I add another axel?

She has some bad oxidization in the gel coat I am trying to get out. I am using wool on a 3000 rpm buffer, rubbing compound, and White Scotch-Brite pads.... Anyone have a better idea?

Yesterday, I removed the last of the hold supports and the stern bulkhead. I am working on ideas to make the stern bulkhead easier to remove as this will make it easier to work on the engine.

I found a solution to the trailer axel issue on craigslist for 500 bucks. It has two Dexter 3500# axels, new bunks and winch. It needs a fender and brakes. I found the fenders at Northerntool for 60 bucks each and the brake assemblies at Southwestwheel 70 bucks per axel...



Spring cannot get here soon enough.

Stringer are coming out one at a time and being replace up to the kitchen bulkhead. The floor is bulit in thirds making this process very easy. I have port side cut out and ready for replacement.
Friday the 10th we are headding up to Homestead Hardwoods to get the marine plywood and some teak. The main storage area in the shop is not heated so I've been dragging my feet on this project, now I'm getting the spring bug....

Picked up a load of marine plywood for Homestead Hardwoods on Friday morning (shameless plug). Now I am ordering epoxy.

Does anyone have a formula for figuring the amount of epoxy needed?

I'm sure the experts will be able to give you a formula but they will need to know the extent of your repairs (stringers, floor, transom). Woodonglass has a starting materials list on the forum if you search him you will find it. Are you using epoxy or poly? The recommendation seems to be poly, it's cheaper and what the boat was built with at the factory. Epoxy is stronger and more forgiving though. Good luck I am enjoying your build.

15 gals of Resin (if you're careful and have minimal waste, if not you'll need 20 gals)
5 qts of cabosil
1lb of 1/4" Chopped Milled Fibers

That's a really nice boat, and a major rebuild project. If you replace the stringers, deck and transom you WILL need more material than the above list. Also, it is not necessary to use epoxy. Your boat is made from Polyester resin and Poly is more than adequate to rebuild your boat. There are a lot of people that say epoxy is more waterproof than poly and that IS trure but, poly is more than enough for your boat, if it were not then the mfg's would not use it for building their boats. IMHO The cost of epoxy is prohibitive for a rebuild of this size. There's a link in my signature for my recommendations on fabricating decks and stringers.
