Greetings from the Aleutian Islands of Alaska,
I've had this engine for about a year now and am really happy with it. The motor is solid, strong, fast, easy starts, great power and runs smoothly through low to high RPMS. Pushes the Montauk 170 about 40mph.
My issue at hand was a sneeze every 4 to 5 seconds that happened only at idle. Once in gear and with slight RPM increase OR slight increase via fast idle the sneeze was gone and it ran smooooooth.
Trying to figure out the cause of the sneeze I've checked compression, carbs, air leaks, plugs (I use the QL77J4C plugs and they look nice and golden) wires, etc... with everything looking great.
So I decided to try timing. I advanced the timing a little (by hand) and the sneeze went away with no obvious change in idle RPM. I let it run for a few minutes and it idled fantastic - no spurts, coughs or sneezes.
I took it out and ran it for several minutes at low, medium and high RPMs and all proved to be great - same expected performance, no problems, same top speed, smooth engine purr etc..
Is it safe to assume that I guessed right and the adjustment was correct? Even though it runs great could the adjustment be damaging something else I'm not aware of?
I do have the OEM Service Manual but I do not have the tools or experience to comfortably do the check for max spark adjustment and as I've said before in previous posts the nearest outboard service center is in Anchorage 800 miles away by plane.
As always - thanks!
Dan
