I've mainly had OMC motors along with a few Mercuries but dont have any experience with Yamahas. I recently found a 1988 30hp Yamaha Model# 30ELG for sale which is listed as having shifting problems. Surprisingly, LU parts are pretty reasonable so it may be worth a buy.
My issue is that I need a short shaft motor for my boat. I have a jackplate so I could probably make a longshaft work but it would be nice to know if a shaft length conversion is possible. I pulled up parts for both this model as well as the 30ESG short shaft and began to compare parts. So far, Iv'e seen that the driveshaft, uppercasing, and exhaust guide have the same parts numbers for both shaft length models (per the parts site I'm using). It's obvious from pictures that the upper casing is a separate part between the two models though. I would also think that the driveshaft would have to be different as well. Can anyone help set me straight on what the differences are?
One other thing....I was looking at a video of a 1999 25hp 3 cylinder model too (as ad had it listed as 25hp, had 25hp decals, and had 3 cyl) since there wasn't a 3 cyl 25hp model in 1988 and surprisingly the two motors looked identical under the hood. Would a 1999 3 cyl 25hp and 1988 3 cyl 30 hp have the same powerhead? Just making sure this motor is not some frankenstein motor with a different powerhead than the model plate lists.
