I just got a bass boat with a 1988 Yamaha 150 hp engine. It hasn't been run in 6 years. I've checked the compression. I've checked the spark. Both look good so far. My questions is about the oil injection. Since this hasn't run in so long, I want to make sure the oil injection is working before I put gas to it and try to fire it.
I'm new to the oil injection systems and I'm far from a professional mechanic although I'm a pretty fair backyard mechanic.
I need to know if the oil injection is working. How would I do that?

Thanks

you can premix your fuel, then fill your oil tank. check your oil usage compared to your fuel usage, it should be using oil at about 50:1 ratio..you may smoke a little but burning double oil will not hurt, while the opposite can be real bad. a lot of people just plug off the oil injection line and premix anyway..I am a premix guy..its just one less thing to go wrong. I would also rebuild the carbs, replace the water pump impeller, change the gearcase oil, replace the t-stats.

Agree, premix the first tank. Recommended after layup anyway. Have to say though that a precision blend sytem can average 100:1. Depends on throttle setting. If the oil level goes down you are ok.

Yeah, I'm a pre-mix guy as well. Every boat I've ever had was pre-mix so I'm used to it. Frankly, I'm very leary of these oil injection systems. It just doesn't feel right to me gassing the boat up without mixing the oil first.
I'm looking at the carbs but the bowls look clean so we will see if I have to pull the carbs off but I'll definately replace the impeller, gear oil and I'll check the thermostats. I'll also check the fuel pump diaphrams.
The guy that had it before said that when he parked it, he sprayed the cylinders with oil and drained the carbs so I'm hoping those to things saves me a lot of headaches.

That's what I figured. I already bought 5 gallons and I pre-mixed it just to be safe. I'm going to try and crank it up in the morning after I install the new plugs.
Other than that, the engine looks great. Compression is within 5 pounds all around and I get spark on all cylinders.
I was always taught that an engine only needs 3 things. Compression, fuel and spark. After that, it's just a matter of mixture and timing.

Hey, it fired right up after I got the gas to the carbs. 6 years and it fired after the first 2 tries. I'm impressed.
I didn't leave it running but for a few seconds as I haven't replaced the water pump yet but it fired right up and ran perfectly.
How hard is it to replace the water pump impeller on this engine?????

Never did it to a motor that old, but Should be easy as long as all the bolts come out without a problem, just like any other motor
