1989 115 HP Mariner only runs on 2 cyls. Now only on one of the 4. It would run on 2 most times I took it out then pick up the other 2 in 2-5 minutes of running wide open. Now wil only run on 1 cyl. I'm 99.9% sure it's spark but don't really want to just start replacing stuff like CDI , stator etc. Have new plugs, wires and coils.

That is a 2+2 motor. It runs on the top 2 ctlinders until 1800 rpm then the other 2 kick in. You will have spark on all 4 ctlinders all the time. The 2+2 operation is controlled by rhe carbs the top 2 have actual idle circuits. The bottom 2 have tiney idle circuits to provide lube to the cylinders but not enough for the cylinders to fire. The top carbs have the starting primer attached to them and the bottom 2 hav an accelerator pump. The accelerator pumphelps with the transition at 1800 rpm. The A FACTORY manual is a must have for working on those motors. The link and sync is a little tricky on them. www.cdielectronics.com has a troubleshooting guide for your ignition system.

Thank you for answering. I've had this boat/motor for almost 30 years and have done nothing to it but run the carbs empty at end of season and start the next season with fresh gas. Changed the spark plugs one, it just hasnt needed anything. I'm aware of the 2+2 but never understood how it actually worked until recently (working on it). That's what has me convinced it is ignition, it is only hitting on cyl #3 instead of 1-2 that have the low speed jets. I can get it to 2500 RPM just on cyl #3 and give a shot of starting fluid into the other 3 carbs with it running with no effect. I just don't know how to trouble shoot CDI module/stator/trigger, to know where to start with part replacement. Perhaps the manual ink you gave me may give some insight. Thanks again for a boost in the right direction. It started doing it last season where it would only run on 2 cyls on open water at wide open for 2 maybe 5 minutes then pick up the other 2 and run fine for the w/end. I'm leaning towards CDI? any thoughts?

You need to check for spark. As i said you will have spark on all 4. You need the factory manual for that motor.

It was CDI module. Boat shop wanted $250 and not in stock. I ordered it on Amazon for $50 (no it's not a merc OEM but....). I ordered it Thur night at 9PM and it was in my mailbox Sat morning.
