alright guys i have looked around and sifted around 100 or so pages to try to get some ideas about the problem i am having...

bought the boat knowing the motor was having issues..
drained and cleaned both fuel tanks and replaced all fuel lines bulbs filters ect...

problem.. cranks and idles wonderful reves on muffs flawlsly..
put it in the water drop her in gear and it will hardly get over an idle and wants to die when you give it fuel..

i am looking for some help and advice if anyone is willing to give it...

thank you for all your help...

and yes i have a manual on order.

I could be a bad trigger or a fuel issue. I would get a dva meter and start looking things over with a service manual. I would do a lync and sync as well.

Standard troubleshooting

Compression test

Spark test EACH cyl using a 7/16 gap spark tester

When both the above check out then rebuild fuel pump and carbs.

Re: 1989 115 Mariner (stack 6)

ok so after a few hectic days at work i got some time to take a look at the inside of my carbs....boy was it nasty.... seals looked good (possibly a recent rebuild)
what i did find was three bowls full of sand looking material..disasembled and cleaned out jets and everything else along with it and put them back on the motor...

i plan on going to the local fishing hole and giving it a try to see if this makes a differnece..

also i broke down the fuel pump and cleand out the trash inthere as well.

if this makes no diffence we will continue on...

also compresion check...120 was the lowest and the highest was around 128..

OK, Sounds good. I presume you set the carb float height properly? I presume you cleaned all the carb passages, and set the idle mixture to 1-1/2 turns out? Did you change the gear oil?, Hit the grease fittings? Change the waterpump impeller, wearplate and all gaskets, prior to taking the boat out, or she might overheat.

Re: 1989 115 Mariner (stack 6)

ok so just got back from a morning fishing trip. this time i used the second tank with new gas and all...

she idles great drop it in gear and you get a sputtering till you get on the throttle. revs to about 2500 then levels out...

both tanks have been tested for vent flow and both are good to go...

here is one thing that i did notice at 2500 the bow rise it there and the motor will not throttle anymore untill you trim the motor up a bit then you get about 2800 rpm...

so with that being said i did not check my float height so this might just make some sense...lol...

parts are on order for the impeller and such...

The problem you currently describe could be the high speed stator windings. When you get your manual check the resistance readings on the stator wires. If it is your stator, CDI makes a better one than Merc.

Re: 1989 115 Mariner (stack 6)

still waiting on my book to come in the mail....talked to the previous owner and he mentioned that when it would level out if he worked the bulb he could get it over the "hump" and get it to go WOT... sounds kinda fishy to me...i have been thought through the carbs and the entire fuel system...

so i am going to ohm out my stator windings and go from there

That sounds like fuel starvation, either fuel pump or plugged filters. There is a screen in the inlet of each carb top. You cannot see it unless you take the barb fitting out. Merc issued a tech bulletin to remove the screens.

Sounds more like the idle mixture screws need to be richer by 1/8 to 1/4 turn...

this is something i will take a look at...

still waiting on my book to come in the mail...Had i knew it was going to take this long i would have paid 15 extra dollars just to get it here quicker.... so i am still down and out.

but on the other hand i still have my jon boat so i am not compleatly left on the bank

While you are waiting, download and read the FREE Ignition Troubleshooting Guide from CDIElectronics.com

You will find Ohm's specs for your ignition and most importantly, the DVA Voltage tests, each spelled out exactly which wire color to test to determine if you have an ignition problem or not.

While you had the boat in the water did you adjust the idle mixture screws to best idle while in Forward gear PLUS about an eighth turn more richer for the additional fuel necessary for good acceleration?

Re: 1989 115 Mariner (stack 6)

Ok so the book finally came in and after vacation and some work weeks that were crazy, i finally got a chance to get back on this.
First thing up, find out what "black box" i have to start my diagnose, well i found i have a idle stabilization box. The kick is that it has been disconnected for some time, question is does this have to be connected for the engine to run correctly?

You do not need to re connect the idle stabilizer. It was a "fix" that was not really needed and caused problems.

Re: 1989 115 Mariner (stack 6)

ok guys here is an update on my situation. I did the link and sync...it still runs the same,
one thing i did notice is that when you start to make a turn it will kill the motor. so now next down the check list.

Re: 1989 115 Mariner (stack 6)

Ok it has been a while since i have posted on the forum. I spent most of the summer and fall fishing with my trolling motor on small waters. The orriginal Motorguide finally kicked the bucket on me, so it was spend the $700 or so to fix the outboard (and not be able to fish that well) or spend the $700 to replace the trolling motor.
I replaced the trolling motor so i could still fish, what i found through my diagnosis was that my high speed stator was in fact not working as it should have been. I am currently waiting on my yearly bounes to come in so that I can get all new electronics for my motor.
CDI has been recommended by my local shop along with many members on here, i have also seen post where people were able to pick up the control boxes off of eBay. I am unsure of what to search for on eBay to get what i need. Or should i just kill the ebay idea and just get the CDI electronics?

I am on a budget of sorts here so any help would be greatly appreciated.
