I have a 1989 155hp Evinrude, I just had the starter rebuilt about 3 months ago. I started the motor once since then. I went out today to take the boat out for the first time and the battery start heating up very hot and the starter would not engage it would just spin, I noticed I had the cables on wrong so I reversed them, now that I have the cables on the right way, the starter still won't engage, it just spins, I can lift the bendix by hand and engage the starter. Now the starter is spinning the motor very very slow. When the starter was rebuilt, he changed out the bushing and I believe that was all. Is this a starter issue, or am I looking at something else.

thanks Mav

If you have an ohmeter the starter is easy to check out.--------Just take it apart and check ohms from shaft to the commutatorand it should read infinity.-------I install new brushes all the time at $5.00 a kit.

Start by testing the starter. Use a set of automotive jumper cables to jump from a known strong battery. If the starter cranks normally this way, it's probably ok. Then have a look at the starter solenoid or the key switch itself. Also, once running, check to see if the battery is recharging. Sometimes the rectifier/regulator takes a crap when the main electrical cables are hooked up backwards. (the function of the tach is also a good indicator...)
