Hi fellas quick run down, first boat Ive owned and Im no mechanical wiz but have a good basic understanding of things. The motor, firstly are these generally a good motor? secondly I have just had a full melt down of the stator and subsequently the rectifier went as well,my mechanic has since pulled the motor down due to low compression and found that the heat generated from this event broke down the oil and intern seized the bearings on the crank shaft creating bad spawling. My question is with a motor this old is it worth spending the money to hone cylinders, re-ring and replace the crankshaft or look for a newer used motor bearing in mind money is the key issue here.If I go ahead with the rebuild is there anything else I should look for after this damage. All coments appreciated :(

When you check the price of that crankshaft! this could well answer your question. I don't think the oil broke down! It just did'nt show up.

Thanks,Just to let you know Im in Australia and the going rate on a used crank shaft is aprox 1100 dollars I havnt even botherd to price a new one as I know it will blow me out of the water. Can you tell me if these are good motors or should I be looking elsewhere. Also If the pistons are in reasonable condition can you get away with just re ringing or is it better to do both pistons and rings?.What do you think

If you like your rig go for a rebuild or buy a remanufactured powerhead. They are good motors.

Please explain what a "bad spawling" is.

Spawling is the termed used by the mechanic where the bearings had run hot and seized on the shaft causing deep scoring or pitting to the shaft.Hey Dhadley is there a way I can email you a photo of the damaged shaft?
