Hi all, I am new to the site. I have tried to search for the answer to my question but came up empty. Sorry if this question has been answered many times over.
I have an 89 Thundercraft Temptation 265 with twin 4.3 litre OMC.
The problem I have is with the port engine. It will not go over 3400 RPM while under load. It has also blown the main bus fuse at one time.
I am thinking it is a point or condenser issue, but any advice would be helpful before I start changing parts.
Thanks n advance for any help!
Cheers

Fuel filters and water separators were replaced last summer, and carbs were rebuilt last summer.

This has been issue for the past 2 seasons. Only the port engine is giving me the above mentioned trouble.
I do regular maintenance all the time.
So, do you think its the points and condensor?
Other that plugs, wires, cap and rotor, this is the first time I have been told that points and condensors are "regular maintenance"

Ayuh,.... I'd start with a general Tune Up, which in yer case is replacin', 'n settin' the points,....

After that, read This, from Don'S Adults Only section,....

... funny. I didn't see that written anywhere in the topic.

What I did hear was a seasoned marine tech suggest a course of action, and someone not taking that so swell.

None of Us 'round here like just throwin' parts at something, Hopin' it gets fixed, but Diagnostics takes a two way street,.....

You, seem to want a single simple answer, 'n yer Right,...... Ya ain't gettin' it here,....

Btw,... If yer relyin' on Mechanics that don't know that Points are an annual throw-away item, I just donno what to say,.....

You've been seriously Mis-informed,...

Gee, the dude gets first class advice absolutely free and he's upset. Yet his "mechanic" charges him to not mention points are a maintenance item and he was apparently happy with that. Go figure!!!

Probably should have just guessed what is wrong with his engine. He would have felt better I am sure.

LOL, troubleshooting is just too much work!

Good thing we didn't ask what his compression numbers were or what the total advance that his distributor is putting out.

Firstly Im sorry for my English, Im not native speaker...
I had same problem last summer. I replaced water separator, carb filter, coil, condenser, fuel pump... but it not helped....
Engine was stalling after 3000 rpm....
I was quite upset :)....
On the last I have found that in a tank, in that intake tube inside the tank, is a screen....
in the middle of the tube....
And becouse I have 1989 boat as well, the sceen was totaly blocked...
Funny... After all that "repairs"....
Try it....maybe it helps....
With greetings from other side of our planet :)

No need to worry about your English. Half the Americans can't put together a proper sentence either.

You sir are lookin for a fortune teller instead of a mechanic, there are many reasons why an engine will not turn up max rpm, how are people here supposed to know what your reason is?
just to start off the top of my head:

bad centrifugal advance on that points distributor--what is your total timing advance at 3000 rpm?
weak fuel pump
corroded anti siphon valve
clogged fuel vent
wrong carb set up
clogged fuel pick up in the gas tank
different drive ratio on the problem drive (unlikely but could happen)
wrong prop installed with too little pitch

there's even more causes than that, so how are we supposed to imagine what your problem is based on the little bit of information you gave???
