Problem with choke sticking on 1989 5.7L OMC with Cobra outdrive.

Fellow posters have I believe correctly diagnosed a problem with my boats engine to be the choke sticking. I am very new to boatin, so my question is this:

On this type of engine, how is the choke engaged, or is that something that automatically happens when I start the boat? I am famaliar with chokes on some vehicles (like a golf cart) but not on boats.

If I could avaid engaging the choke to begin with, then I could solve the problem of the choke sticking.

If the choke automatically engages when I start the boat, then how do "un-stick" the choke when the problem arises again?

I am planning to have several things fixed on the boat soon, but just need a temp. fix so I can use it this weekend.

NOTE*** Just spoke with a boat mechanic who thought this sounded more like bad fuel or possibly water in the fuel tank as opposed to a sticking choke problem. Boat was sitting for awhile before I purchased, and may have had ethanol gasoline in the tank....just an idea. He is recommending a fuel stabilizer.

The choke is automaticaly activated when you turn the key on, watch it slowly close, once engine heats up the bimetal spring in the choke housing will begin to open the choke back up, the rate of opening is adjustable by loosetening the screws on the housing and rotating the cap, there are markings on the cap top with a pointer that indicate lean-rich direction. If you want to eliminate the choke completely just follow the wire drom the choke housing and disconnect it where it plugs into the harness, then turn the housing to the lean direction till the spring has the choke door completely open.
