I have a bit of a problem and don't want to just do this haphazardly but would appreciate if someone could explain how to add a remote button starter. I'm trying to work on this motor by myself (wife has had enough of me bugging her as my key turner) & it is a bit difficult to turn the motor over to test spark, electrical etc, when one has to be at the key on the remote console. So I guess the question is --- I've seen 12v starter button accessories at places like Harbor Freight Tools...will that work and how do I attach it or is there something better for marine apps. Thnx

Basically you have to provide battery positive to the positive side of the starter solenoid coil (the one of the two small terminals that isn't wired directly to ground). This can be done with a jumper wire/alligator clip or a typical automotive remote starter switch. If you need to test for spark put the ignition in the run position or disconnect the big red plug.

To use the remote starter switch, clip one of the wires to a positive battery terminal, this could be at the battery itself or the cable at the starter solenoid that comes from the battery. The second wire from the remote switch goes to the small post on the starter solenoid, if you solenoid has two small terminals, the yellow wire with a red tracer is the one you want. If you depress the button the engine will spin over. If you are checking spark make sure to turn the key to the ON position, otherwise you woun't get any spark.
