I have an E70TLCEM that came on a pontoon I bought this year. I have had all kinds of trouble with it idling and starting in the water. I've taken it to a mechanic twice and with the same results. It runs fine for the first day or so but progressively gets harder to start and doesn't want to idle. It runs good at higher speeds if you can get it started. The previous owner hadn't used it much in the last couple years and left fuel in it all winter. I have been reading several other threads and have come to the conclusion that the carbs may need cleaning. I have ordered carb rebuild kits and service manual. Any tips on rebuilding carbs? Will the service manual walk me through this process? Or is this even my problem? Also the last couple times I had the boat out the Tach was intermitten. It works at lower rpms but starts to bounce at higher rpms and quits wide open.

Check out the FAQ for a thread by Tashasdaddy that will help you with the carb rebuild. Fairly straightforward, especially armed with a service manual.

Be sure that the idle is set to 650 to 750 RPM under load in gear. I would follow the steps in the manual for a linc n sync when you are through cleaning the carbs. Get rid of that old fuel and start with fresh.

First time user. Having trouble getting to tashasdaddy FAQ thread. Also all old gas gone. I've run 4 or 5 tanks through it since I've owned it this year. Thanks for the help.

Re: 1989 70 hp evinrude carb rebuild

Rebuilt carbs this weekend. Went great! Went through link and sync procedure except didn't have timing light with me at lake. Set throttle plate sync back where it was and left idle speed the same. Started on earmuffs ran fine 1100 - 1200 rpm. Put it in lake and it started right up and ran great idle in gear about 900 rpm. Ran around lake for half hour and shut it off. Fired right back up as soon as you hit the key. However i stopped and fished for about 2 hours then had trouble starting it again. I had noticed when we were running around the lake wide open the fuel filter next to fuel tank was being sucked dry but engine was still running fine. I had already changed the filter going into the VRO2. So anyway I pumped bulb primer a couple times before fuel line got full again. I had cranked on the engine several times before i did that and at the time it didn't help. I ended up having to take the cover off the motor and use the manual primer lever on the primer solenoid. Engine started right up. The primer solenoid has been intermittent for some reason. Any ideas why fuel line is not staying full and what might be wrong with primer. Also i did change tank filter after i got back home and blow in tank to make sure pickup tube was not plugged.

What was your starting procedure step by step?

When you turn that red lever away from the solenoid, when it is usually facing towards it, allows fuel to flow through it to the crankcase. Usually only need to do this if the battery dies and you need to rope start it.
