Hello all,

I am in the market for a new one. However, what are some things I should look for?

My plan is to get one that goes as high as 7,000 rpm's. Is a digital tach a good or bad idea?

What do I need to make sure of prior to buying so that I know I am buying a tach that will work with my motor? Also, will I need to purchase a wiring harness separately?

Thanks

If you already have a tach you simply remove it and replace it with the new one. If you don't have one, you will need the harness. It plugs into the three pin connector just under the key switch on the control box. Tach by Teleflex and Faria are standard and work on most outboards. The only calibration you need to make is to set the dial on the back to 6P. Instructions come with the tach. Not difficult to install.

I switched my tach on my 75 Hp Evinrude to a digital OMC tach that I purchased from ebay. It works great and I like it better than the needle gauge.

From this thread, I understand my motor is a 6 pole? How do I know this or find this out?

I just added a Teleflex tach to my '73 Johnson. They are compatible with like 90% of the outboards out there. The included instructions tell you what to set it for. Your is almost definitely a 6P and that's what the tach is set for by default. It was a very easy install and just worked.

Your motor has a 12 "Pole" alternator. The setting on the Tach is "6" pulse...
