I'm looking at buying an '89 Dixie Cheater w/ '89 70HP Johnson Seahorse that has been well taken care of. Is this a reliable motor? Any personal experiences that someone can share? Thanks.

One of the best.

Do your due diligence and check the things that need to be checked.

1. Compression. Over 100 and even on all three.

2. Lower Unit fluid. Free of water.

An excellent designed engine. However, as with anything mechanical, neglect or just bad luck can wreak havoc.

As DJ states, check it out thoroughly before making the purchase.... compression, spark, gearcase.

(Piston Play Check)
(J. Reeves)

This procedure will tell you if there is any wear or play in the Wrist Pin, Wrist Pin Bearing, or Connecting Rod to Crankshaft area.

Remove the spark plugs. Insert a screwdriver, dowel, punch, or some object of your choice through the s/plug hole and into the cylinder/piston area. Hold the tool lightly against the top of the piston. Turn the flywheel by hand, bringing the piston up to top dead center, then continue turning the flywheel to pull the piston down about a inch..... all the while holding the tool lightly against the piston top.

Now, at the point whereas the piston has been dropped down about a inch, grab the flywheel and hold it firmly. Now, push that tool solidly and firmly against the piston top.

If the piston moves without moving the flywheel, there is a problem (wear, play, clearance, etc) somewhere with the items mention in the first sentence. Be sure to check all of the pistons/cylinders.

Agree, if taken care of any 80's Johnnyrude is bullit proof, they are some of the best engine ever made in my opinion.

I have an '81 50 Evinrude with the original power head and my last comp test was 126-124 cold and it runs like a top.

I have replaced the coils and CDI and rewired it but that was all preventive maintanence, other than blowing up a couple lowers, which was my fault, it has run flawlessly.

Check the things DJ and Joe mentioned, if you can actually run the boat on the water than is the best.
