I have a 1989 88 spl that charges at 15+ volts at idle. Electronics started to smoke. I tried 2 differnt rectifiers and still no change. Does anyone have any ideas what I should try? Could I put a watercooled regulater rectifier on this motor ? thanks

Have you checked the condition of the battery?

get a service manual check stator, the rectifer is unregulated and they will go as high as 16 volts.

It does go as high as 16 volts. is this normal for this type of charging system.

15 volts at idle sounds extreme. If I remember correctly from last year, my 88SPL would range from 12+ to 16+. 12+ at idle and 16 or so above half throttle. If you don't mind carrying around a 2nd battery dedicated to your electronics, it could be an easy solution to your problem. I think an earlier thread concerning adding a tach to a 88SPL had some more technical solutions.

Would I hook up my electronics strait to the second battery? And how would I charge that battery? And what would adding a tach do to solve my problem ?

Yes you could hook your electronics straight to a 2nd battery. You would need to recharge it (with a charger) when it drops below 12.3 volts or so. I'm not suggesting you add a tach, but most tachs are voltage sensitive as most electronics are. You could add a regulator, I haven't looked into it.

On an unregulated system, it is the battery size (capacity) that determines the max voltage. A maintenance free battery or one low on water will cause the voltage to rise.

If you use a large deep cycle group 27, you will not have the problem.

A quick fix is just to put 2 batteries in parallel, then you will never have a high voltage problem as long as they are in good shape.

Back in those days we also wired the gauge lights and used the running lights to absorb some of the extra voltage.

I installed a water cooled regulator/rectifier and it solved my problem so if anyone else out there has the same issue as me try this out works great .
