Previously I wrote a thread about my 88spl overheating. long story short, the water deflectors on the starboard side were blocking the water flow. I didnt replace them but I cleared the passage. so now i was getting good water flow, but the waterjacket cover was leaking like crazy. when i replaced the water jacket gasket a few months ago. I broke like 10 of the bolts off so I drilled and retapped. I didnt remove the head from the block though and a few of them were drilled crooked. It didnt leak before, but i figured of coarse it didnt there was no water flow duh! So i bought a new head, gaskets, water jacket cover, and deflectors. total cost was about $200. I got the head on ebay for $79, I noticed that it didnt have these.....

How can i mount these things? (do not know the term) are the grounded?

Thanks in advanced.

Re: 1989 88spl new head

Your head is a 1977 or earlier. It will technically work. Those engines had a special bracket over the heads that would hold the coils. In 1978 they relocated the coils to the heads. You can make a bracket. Just be sure that the coils have an excellent ground to the block. Should your new head be a head from a 135, it will run higher compression and you should flow more fuel to that head through the carbs to keep those two cyls from running lean.

Hi Cortes, just wanted to ask you a couple of questions real quick.

First, I am thinking about checking my delfectors as well, are they just right underneath the water jackeet cover or are there some under the head as well?

Also, this has nothing to do with your problem but....how did you manage to attach a picture like that, that big I mean? Everytime I try to attach one it tells me the file size is too big, is there a trick to it or a way you shrink the file size?

Thanks.

Could you now cut off the old brackets and have them welded on the new cover??

Deflectors are under the head, I resized the pic with photoshop.

Whatif I made my bracket like this
attachment.php

Using an L-shaped steel. I will probably also add a jumper ground wire from the bracket to the block just in case.

Should I make my brackets out of aluminum or steel. what would give me better grounding?

So I made the bracket for my coils. Heres a pic
attachment.php

I ran the motor for about 15 mins. Maximum temp was about 125. The starboard side kept going down to about 105. I will test it out in the water tomorrow. Wish me luck.
Thanks
Vic
