I started my 88spl today, since i haven't ran it in about 3 months. it started and ran fine. I shut it off and then restarted, but this time my starter kept spinning. I shut off the motor and it still kept spinning. I panicked and hit the battery switch and it finally stopped. If i turn the battery switch on it will continue spinning. Is my solenoid stuck or is my ignition switch bad? how do i go about troubleshooting this. Thanks in advanced.

unplug the big red cannon plug. if this stops the starter, it is the ignition, if not it is the solenoid.

Check the ignition switch first. If they get water in them they'll do this. Make sure the switch is mounted so the drain hole is at the bottom and clear. You can pull the yellow wire with the red tracer off the switch. If that pole (s) on the switch is still hot, the switch is the problem.

If you set the battery switch to OFF with the engine running you probably damaged the regulator so make sure you check the charging system after you get the starter issue fixed.

I didnt stop the battery while the engine was running. I cut the motor off and the starter kept spinning, so i cut the battery. But i will check the charging system, just in case. (whats the best way to do this?)
