Tom;

The alarm horn should be in the remote control unit. What wire are you talking about?

Do you know your engine s/n as I think I have the manual for it and can send you a copy.

I have a '88 100 HP which is similar. My alarm is in the dash. It's a small piezo buzzer.

I have the same motor and year. My wire for the alarm horn is low on the left side of the motor(same side as the oil tank). Its behind the cowling. A blue wire with a quick disconnect.

Green Hornet. Listen to Carholme...he is one of the Mercury Gurus and knows these motors inside and out.

Ok...... Carholme reply didn't even answer my question?

He asked you an important question. Give him an answer so he can respond with the right information. He told me his crystal ball is out for repair. :)

The gentleman who posted the initial question, Bigaceks1 has not bothered to respond for two days, though he was on here yesterday morning. Maybe he got things sorted out.

TD-Maker;

I am not a Mercury or anything guru!

Green Hornet;

What was the question I was supposed to respond to?

My apologies to the OP, sort of. When Green Hornet jumped in with an unrelated question/statement, I responded to him instead of the Bigaceks1. So Big, you still need to answer carholme. And Hornet, who is disconnecting any wires?

Re: 1989 90 hp Merc

I don't recall having a remote on this 90 hp outboard motor,,,this hole thing started when I replaced the rectifier,I disconnected the battery with the motor running to test the voltage for the stador and the oil warning module started smoking( i know stupid me) so I replaced that and another rectifier,now I am not getting the BEEP when I engage the Key,so I just figured that I burned up the Alarm as well! I ordered the Manual and it should be here Tuesday. Like I said, I can see the Alarm on the spec's but can not find it on the Motor! Thanks,,NO FIGHTING!

Tom;

Are you saying that you drive this boat from the back end steering with a tiller handle? Or do you drive from the front with a steering wheel and a shifter/throttle control?

This starting to get Frustrating,received the Mercury Outboard Motor 1965-89 Repair Manual today,it only shows the Auto-blend unit,it looks nothing like the one on the Mercury Parts page for my hp and year. I really don't understand this! here is a pic,maybe someone can help me locate this unit: #39ALARM HORN AND WIRE ASSEMBLY #39.jpg

I was going to send you the Mercury manual for your engine but seeing as you can't even answer the questions I asked, I'm out of here.

The battery is the voltage regulator on these motors. That's why you never disconnect it.

Re: 1989 90 hp Merc

sorry Bigaceks1 but actually I gave you the wrong answer. That wire was for the low oil alarm. Mine started going off and wouldn't stop even though the tank was full so I unhooked it. The warning alarm for overheating you don't want to unhook.

Re: 1989 90 hp Merc

On some of the motors of that vintage there was no alarm module and the busser dose not sound when the key is turned on. They were wired so the alarm horn would only sound if the motor was in a overheat or the oil was low. Both of the sensors would put a ground on the alarm horn and the operator had to see just what was the trouble. If the temp sensor only goes to a small block and the oil wires go to the same block as dose the test button then this would be what you have. The small block only has two screws and one is ground to the block and the other is insulated and is where the temp wire and one from the oil sender and one from the test button will be. Therefore no alarm module and only sound when one of them are causing trouble or the test button is pushed. JMO
