Re: 1989 alpha 1 gen 1 shift cable replacement

I just changed mine last week. Pretty Easy job. Follow directions in manual for adjusting. I went with OEM Merc cable too.
My only thing was I needed to go buy deep sockets to screw shift cable sleeve and remove old. A spark plug socket wasn't deep enough.

Now, the bellows kicked my *. I know there has to be an easier way then the way i did it!! Easy to get them all off, hard as hell to get them back on even with bellows glue. Youtube helped a little. Flexible snap on tool is a must too.

HINT: When using the OEM cable, just unscrew that little white plastic guide, install the cable with a regular socket and screw the guide back in. Don't try that on the aftermarket cable, they are crimped in.
