I'm getting ready to pull this engine out of a 89 Chris Craft Seahawk 254. It is stripped down to just a short block all wiring,hoses,accessories...ect are removed. The outdrive is off. The whole bell housing assembly comes out with the motor is that correct? So is it just the 4 engine mount bolts holding it in? There are no bolts coming from the outside into the back of the transmission?

I see a picture of a AQ271 that has been removed. There are 6 bolt holes on the back of the flywheel housing around the tube portion. It looks like also have to come out is that right?

Yes the 6 bolts on the clamp ring need to be removed.

I'd leave the flywheel cover attached to the transom shield, and I'd separate the engine from the F/C.
If you remove the F/C with the engine, you'll want to at minimum replace the inboard large rubber cushion. This cushion makes the water seal.
You'd also need to go through the initial one-time alignment procedure.

Be sure to replace the primary drive shaft bearings and seals while you are in this far.

Salt water? If so, this is all the more reason to NOT attempt removing the six clamping collar bolts until the engine is out of the way.
With the engine out of the way, heat can be applied to the six bolt thread bosses.
Be real carfull when removing the 6 bolts.PB Blaster and maybe even some heat???

Those seals seldom go bad unless they are super flat, and haven't seen that happen on many gas engines. If you want to leave the flywheel cove in the transom, at least take the upper gear box off so you don't strain things while doing the job.

Re: 1989 AQ271 Engine Removal

I guess i should give the back story on this boat. It was purchased new as a leftover in 91. It was used in saltwater until 1998 when a riser gasket leaked water into the cylinders on one side. It sat for about 3 weeks with salt water in the cylinders. By then i couldn't turn the engine. So i pulled the heads off and poured oil over the top of all the pistons and then shrink wrapped it and it sat that way until now. I'm hoping to get the pistons out and hone the cylinders and put it back together with new rings and lifters. The boat really didn't have a lot of hours on it.So it seems the recommendation from you guys is to leave the flywheel cover {bell housing} in the boat and pull the engine without it? And then should i pull the flywheel cover out after that or just leave it alone? If i leave the flywheel cover attached to the transom then i won't have to align anything when i go back in with the engine? Sorry for all the questions. I am an auto mechanic but i've been mainly just rebuilding transmissions for the last 20 years. This is my first attempt at any major I/O repair. Thanks for the help. Once i'm into the job {starting in the next 10 days or so} i will post pics.

I also remember before the boat was put into storage it had a power trim problem. The trim worked in both directions but under power the trim would sink to -3 and then it would hold. I could trim it back up to 0 or + while under power but as soon as i let go of the trim switch it would slowly sink back to -3 and then it would hold. I was thinking that there may be a valve in the trim motor that keeps the pressure in the cylinders that is defective. Does that sound possible?

Possible the fluid's low?? Yes it's possible that the hyd.pump is defective?
As far as the big rubbers?? Your going all this way. Just remember how much work it was to remove the engine.
If the rubbers leak the motor should come out again??
Depending on the shape and condition.you might want replace?
Really think your gonna use that block after it's set for 15 years frozen?? I guess miracles happen?? :)

Is this a Ford block? It looks like it. Find out what block this corresponds to in Ford automobiles and you can buy a used auto block from a junkyard and dress it with your marine accessories.

It's a small block Chevy 350 (aka AQ271) and it is total junk by that picture.

Yes Don looking back i had to be crazy to think there was any chance of saving that block. I see these rebuilt 280 hp marine engines with heads for around $2000 on the internet. Does that sound too cheap? I don't want to buy anything that was done half *****ed. Advanced Marine Engines sells a rebuilt 350 long block for $2100 shipping included.
