Greetings from accross the pond and a bit North. Just bought the above boat after sailing most of my life.
Have a few questions which I seek advice on.
The engine contrary to all opinion is ultra reliable and any faults occuring are due to inexperience e.g failing to open the fuel tank vent prior to launch and running to quay.Dohh!
Starts first time every time, I winterised it and changed gearbox oil as soon as I got it in November 2005.Have only used it for a week since as I work in Holland.
I do not have a working speedo but have just fitted a Farunu GPS and I can not get more than 22-24 knts from the engine/prop spec as is.
Even throttling back does not reduce the speed. I seem to have reached the max speed.Have three props that came with the boat two brand new and tried all of them without much sucess. Not interested in skiing at my age. Have been advised that gas filled automatic trim would help but it gets on to the plane quickly anyway.
I think that the throttle cable may be sliding slightly in the saddle clamp on on the engine, would this give the symptoms?

The next job is to replace the 1989 Teleflex steering gear as it was seized through the motor lift bracket. POINT of note shotgun cleaning kit fits perfectly to clean this out.

I need to get a spare wheel what is the pcd size or bolt centre for the standard Escort trailer that came with the boat?

Finally the full cover is getting a bit tired and has been repaired due to wear duringt long tows to the water.Any tips as to the best cover for allround use and trailering?

Doesn't 24 knts convert to somethig close to 27 MPH?This could be close to the low end of your typical speed.
Speaking generically it is difficult to know where you are at without the propeller demensions and your max rpm. Also what is your load.Check the throttle to see if it opens all the way when you advance the throttle. With the cover off the motor observe the
mechanism as you gradually open the throttle. If possible look into the carburator opening to see if the throttle plate is opening all the way.
Usually props have their demensions on them
something like 12 X 14 diameter X pitch.
Have you tried adjusting the trim of your motor?
If you trim out (prop away from the boat)it raises the bow, slows hole shot but may help the speed.Trimming in speeds hole shot but may reduce speed.
Where is the antivent plate (just above the prop) in relation to the bottom of the boat?
Even with the bottom of the boat is a good start
then raise the motor verticaly one hole at a time
until just before ventilation becomes a problem.
Raising the motor an inch could result is 2 to 3 mph.

Thanks for the reply None of the props have anything but 11 1/2 stamped on them. One has slightly pear shaped blades and appears that it provides tyhe best. With my wife and the dog it does seem a litle faster. That was why I asked the question about the gas filled trim tabs. I understand from a source in the UK that there are no other props for this motor as averyone considers them to be ***t.

Would it not start out life with the optimum for the boat?
