I have a question. I am trying to sell my bayliner with a 125 hp force engine on it. It has always ran good for me. However today I took some folks for a test drive and all of a sudden the boat had a skip like the gears were grinding. I kept going a little way and it ran ok but not as fast as normal. Than all of a sudden it happend again and I shut the boat down. I went to the back and saw that it look like water was coming out of the engine. Also this past week it looked like oil was coming out of the outdrive. Almost like the seal is bad. Last but least when I turn the ignition now a alarm sound goes on. Does anyone have a clue what could be wrong and how much money it could cost. The guy has offered my 1700.00 so I am seriously thinking about selling it for that . I only paid 2000.00 but was hoping to get a little more to help pay for my other boat. Please help me on what to do. I don't want to take it to a marina to see what's wrong. thanks Shane

Shift linkage could need adjusting, drive could be drstroyed, waterpump shot, (overheat alarm is sounding), heat gasket could have blown - or worse the water jacket or exhaust manifolr could be shot.

Take whatever he will give you for it, as it will cost a fortune to fix (300-$4000) .

If you were a really super nice guy, you would not sell it to anyone, but burn it. :)

peace.

I know. I am taking just what I have left to pay on it. I am just going to unload it. That guy knows the risk he is taking.

Does anyone know anyone that buys boats like? Like I said before I am not sure what's wrong with it but it has something to do with my lower unit. Is there anyway I can check things over to try to make some kind of assumptions of what's wrong? Anyone have any solutions? I owe 1500.00 on it so I would like to get as close as that as possible.

Ok I finally built up the courage to look underneath the boat. I noticed that the shaft broke off at the knuckle. It'a 12 inch shaft that has about 3 gears that slide over it. The gears on top look fine. I also looked up where the shaft goes in. Those grooves looked good also. However the cup where the knuckle sits in is a little tore up. Does anyone know what I am looking at for repairs and how much it cost to buy this part? I would imagine that the bearing that the shaft rides in would have to be replaced. Would this cause the boat to overheat or may I be looking at something more?

If you are mechanicaly inclined you might be able to repair it but it sounds like you have several issues with this motor. I think I would sell it for what I could get and go from there. Dispite what roscoe said, Burn it, your a hard man charlie browwn. ;)

I have no doubt that I will be able to repair. The question is how much will this part cost? I am sure I can fix it. Does anyone know where you can get used shafts? Or what also might happen when something like this occurs?

Shane,

I have the same motor only an 84 model. The housing cracked on my lower unit just behind the prop. A new lower unit is available but they wanted $2600 for it. Rebuilds were about $1100. I found a good used unit on ebay for about $400.

There are plenty of used units on ebay and a few salvage shops that will sell the used parts. If the gears in mine will work for you (there was nothing wrong with them), I'll sell the whole lower unit cheap.

ljshein@yahoo.com

Jeff

Jeff

I think I may only need the shaft that that runs up. I am not sure I am being it to the marina to take a quick look it to see what I need for parts. I will let you know. Does anyone else have any parts for sell that I may need? Please let me know. What is the name of the housing that the knuckle of the shaft sits in? What is it's main function besides where the knuckle sits in?
