Iam looking at buying a 1989 black max 135 hp. owner says rebuilt in 1999, motor has approx 150 hrs since rebuild. Is there any thing in particular I should look for at sea trial ( top end, lower end, excessive smoking, etc.). Also, is this or was this motor oil injected? I didn't see an oil resevior anywhere on the boat. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Good motor...IMO

It was oil injected originaly.
Check the compression on the cylinders..
Check the lower unit oil for water intrusion.

KCLOST,
Any idea what the compression should be? Also, would there be any signs of water intrusion after a sea trial (1-2 hrs maybe )? What would the gear lube look like if new water had just entered after a sea trial? What's IMO mean?

Compression should be around 100PSI on all cylinders and all cylinders should be within 10% readings of each other. The gear lube would look milky if water is getting in. Kinda like coffee with cream...

Re: 1989 Black Max 135 Concerns

I just sold one of those puppies and it was a great motor. There are a few things to be mindful of, some of these generally apply to all outboards tho. These motors can have a few problems with the trip/tilt, so tilt it up a soon as you get there and see if it holds. Some leak down and not always because of bad seals - something to do with the pump I was told. Mine has compression of about 150 but, as long as theyre all the same and over 100 thats cool. New gearbox oil looks just like that, new and tannish, old is darker - alot darker and yeah, water will make it milky. They were oil injected but some people take that off. With the motor comming up to 14 years old, you should give some of the wearing parts a once over too ie engine mounts (top and bottom), prop shaft to make sure the prop isnt seized on, gear box for cluncking - just general stuff. Hope this helps.
