I just puchased a 13 foot Whaler with a 1989 evenrude 30 hp engine on it. It is electric start, but the starter drive gear is not working. I was able to pull start the engine, it started right up but would not idle, after i let it idle down it stoped and wouldn't re start. The previous owner reported the same thing, he said let it rest awhile an it should start. I want to know how i should procede with getting this engine operational, such as rebuilding carbs etc. I have not done a compresion test yet. Also any repair manual recamendations?

Thanks Paul

Get the oem OMC manual either here at iboats or on Ebay, stay away from Clymer, Seloc or anyhting on CD, the factory manual covers only your engine where the others have as many as 22 models and 15 years.

Not much info to go by but start with a known good battery and check your cables, they tend to corrode from the inside out, clean all terminals and try it again, It could be a number of things from a key switch to a solenoid.

If that doesn't do it try jumping the solenoid, mine is on the back of the engine and has 2 really big lugs on it,one top and one bottom, just follow the positive cable from the starter and it will go to the solenoid.

Use a big wire or coat hanger and touch the top and bottom lugs, this bypasses the solenoid and will tell you if the starter works and if you have power.

If the starter works by jumping and not with the key that narrows it down, once you get your manual it will tell you how to check the key switch.

Also one of the top stickys in this forum is Waking a sleeping outboard, that should be very helpful.

You are slightly 'lucky' if having both a carb problem and starter problem on this engine.
The starter including the whole starter bracket must be removed in order to get the carb off.
Now when having both loose on the table, proceed according to your manual.
Do NOT try to remove the starter without the bracket as a unit, it will just fall apart in pieces and be impossible to get back together again

I was looking at the starter yesterday. It was not clear on how to remove the bracket?
Where would the OEM manuals be on this site?
