1989 evenrude 30 hp

I just puchased a 13 foot Whaler with a 1989 evenrude 30 hp engine on it. It is electric start, but the starter drive gear is not working. I was able to pull start the engine, it started right up but would not idle, after i let it idle down it stoped and wouldn't re start. The previous owner reported the same thing, he said let it rest awhile an it should start. I want to know how i should procede with getting this engine operational, such as rebuilding carbs etc. I have not done a compresion test yet. Also any repair manual recamendations?

I have the same motor, and you're going to love it once you get it running properly. I would shop ebay for a OEM service manual. A compression and spark test is a good place to start.
