Hi Guys,

I have been searching the forum and i have seen many posts regarding shift rod height. When i put my motor in reverse it clunks before going into gear wether i shift it slowly or fast.My question is there a cable adjustment i can make? The shift rod height is in spec for my motor, so i am leaning more towards the control.I am not sure how to diagnose this.

Thanks

Well it got 38 views however nobody seems to know? Is this normal for these older evinrude motors?

If you are having shift issues, disconnect the shift rod and shift it by hand. With the shift rod set at the exact height, it should shift normally by hand (no clunks.) If it still clunks, it is probably internal to the drive. If it shifts normally by hand (no clunks,) then the cable is out of adjustment when it is connected to the shift lever. Any further adjustment can be done with the turn knob at the shift cable end in the lower cowling.

It should clunk about the same going into forward also. Shifting it slowly it should clunk/grind alot until you put enough pressure on the clutch dog to totally engage it. Shifting into gear (forward or reverse) should not be done slowly, surest way to damage the dog and gears. Eventually it wont go or stay in gear when you grind off the mating surfaces enough.

rtek brings up an excellent point. When shifting, thrust the control handle briskly, don't shift it slowly.

thanks for the responses it does not clunk at all when going into forward just reverse.I disconnected the cable and manually shifted and the clunk is noticeably quieter. What the best way you guys have found to adjust this connection with the cable

Disconnect the shift cable at the engine end. Shift the engine shift lever into neutral. Re-center the control box shift lever into the neutral position. Visually inspect the shift cable end to see if it perfectly matches up with the engine shift lever stud. If it is off slightly, adjust the engine end of the shift cable by moving/rotating the thumbscrew. This will align the engine's neutral shift lever position with the exact neutral position on the control box.
