Just purchased a used 1989 Larson boat with 1989 Evinrude outbaoard that just had 1 piston replaced. The motor still needs to be broken in per the dealer for another 4 hours @ differnt RPM's @ 100/1 oil ratio.

1. How do you control the oil ratio from 50/1 to 100/1 when you have an oil tank, I don't see any adjustments?

2. They recommend a 20 hour service after break in, Is this service something I can do or is it a dealer item. I guess I just need to know what the 20 hour service is.

Thanks/Jerry

Re: 1989 Evinrude 150 Oil Tanks Question

Any recently overhauled engine must run double oil for the break-in period. This means that the oil supply to the engine must be doubled, from 50-1 (normal ratio) to 25-1 (break-in) ratio. Your engine has a separate oil tank and your fuel pump will premix that oil and fuel to around 50-1. That gets you half way there. You also must introduce additional oil into the boat's fuel tank at a ratio of 50-1 during breakin. Premix oil into the fuel tank depending on how much fuel is there. When the engine runs it will actually be getting the enriched mixture at 25-1. Continue this through the break-in process. When it is complete, discontinue adding extra oil to the boat's fuel tank. I've not done a 20 hour check on any of my engines, but I do check for the following after the first time out: After the first heat/cool cycle, I retorque the heads and exhaust covers. I pull the plugs and check them for color. Check the pistons crowns with a light to make sure they are not shiny. Check the oil tank to make sure the oil level is going down (is being consumed by the oil/fuel pump.) Check for water and fuel leaks. You can even check the powerhead temp with a laser gun to make sure it is running at the right temps. (If it were a new engine, I'd probably check the lower unit oil for color, too.) If you are comforatable doing these things and know what to look for, they are fairly easy. If the dealership that overhauled this engine requires this 20 hour service in order to maintain any powerhead warranty-take it back to them.
