1989 Evinrude 150 XP V-6... How bad is this gonna hurt?

I just picked up my boat from being winterized. I didn't get a chance to talk to the mechanic, but he left a note for me on my invoice. This is what it said... "Motor very hard to start. Possibly starter running rough. Leaking water on cylinder heads and exhaust cover. May be getting water into cylinders or carb plugged up on some high speed jets." What am I looking at as far as correcting these issues, and could they point to the problem I was having late this summer (running at WOT with the boat barely moving and then struggling to keep the engine running at low throttle speeds). Is this going to end up being something I'm going to have to take a second mortgage out on the house? Thanks for the help.

Its gonna cost a whole lot less doing it yourself and its quite do-able.

First you need to find out what the problem is and what caused it.

It sounds like a leaky cylinder head , overspeeding at half throttle etc can be due to compression leak, it does the same as advancing the ignition.

So You need to get thee to the auto part store and get a compression guage. Do a compression test and write the numbers down.
I'd expect to see one side lower. Thats not a bad thing if its just the head gasket.

Test the starter per the manual, get the genuine Johnson manual at this link,

clean all the grounds from the battery to the starter and charge the battery.
Carbs probably need rebuilding with kits, very simple job.

Do the compression test first and post back the results to this thread, save it to your favourites list now.

I think you'll find a clogged carb ran the engine lean, it overheated and popped the head gasket, that caused all the symptoms you have now.
The starter is a seperate issue.

If the engine has had water in cylinders I would be pulling the heads and inspecting the cylinder walls and pistons to check for damage.Also if it was running lean enough to overheat cylinder,it likely has damage from lack of lubrication. Do as Jones suggests and check compression 1st and post results.
