Two quick questions. I have an '89 Evinrude 15hp that has a bad kill switch in the tiller. I have no interest (or money) to get an OEM kill switch for the tiller, so I want to just plug in a regular outboard kill switch I have that works where there's already a plugged hole in the lower engine cover. I want to just leave the dead kill switch in the tiller and connect up the new one. There's nothing special about the kill switch in the tiller? The second part of my question is, I broke the lower mount bracket on the same outboard but have an '78 Johnson 9.9 Seahorse, I believe the parts directly swap (it looks that way on the parts diagrams for each motor), is that correct?

My mid-80s 9.9 have the kill switch button -- mounts in the opening you mention on the right side of the lower cover, provided it's open (not being used for a remote throttle cable). I bought a button and wiring for one of the motors (eBay, I think), and they seemed pretty available. Look for a single connector leading to the power pack for one of the two wires. The second one goes to one of the coil mounting bolts.

Your emergency kill switch might already be wired that way (not sure). If so, I think you could piggy back the connection to the CDI unit for your new button.

If you have a remote control setup, the kill switch is located on a bracket attached to the front of the lower engine cover.

Thanks, that's pretty much what I figured, I think this was the first year or close to when they decided to put the kill switch in the tiller - hate it, I suspect they did it to make the part more expensive than anything about safety or convenience.

Electrical current doesn't care where it goes. As long as the circuit is open when running and closed to shut off, you're good.

As for the motor mount, I believe it's the same casting for a generation of those motors. Swap away.
