I bought a 1989 Evinrude with remote start that was set up for stick steering and remote key start. All the wires were disconnected from the back of the key so the wiring harness could be removed. There are screw terminals on the back of the key but none are numbered. I cannot figure out which wires go to which terminal on the key switch. This key is the kind you push in to prime or choke the motor. The wiring harness has more wires than there are terminals on the back of the key. Anyone got a wiring diagram and a "key terminal code" for where to put them that they can share with me?? Also, where do the hot wire and ground wire from the battery attach under the cowling? Thx for any help.....

this 83 print is not your 1989 but it gives you the basics

Batt +12 goe to B
YEL BLak & BLk are kill wires to M
C is choke push to start like yours
S is START or SELENOID power to turn the starter

Well. on closer examination my switch does not look like the one in the diagram. I am attaching a picture of the back of my key switch so hopefully someone can identify which terminal is for which wire and let me know. There are no markings on the terminals.

I clearly see letters stamped om the edge....go with that

A=Accessories M Magneto

can'T see others due to angle.....look for B for B+ battery 12v

etc...

otherwise use a VOM to test contact configurations in various states

ex: B+ to A 0hms while ON
B+ to S 0 ohms when starting
B+ to C 0 ohms when choking etc...

what about the A letter I see....regardless you have few options

If you are handy measure with a VOM to determine each function

BTW... thisinfo is for assistance but may be different on your switch .but the basics are there
for you to trouble shoot and reconnect the wires.

look for other letters closely you found the 2 M for magneto
you have the A for accessories (see left arrow)

the rest should be

S selenoid -start (unmarked here between M&C) one will be C (choke) and one is B for 12v

one wire is CHOKE so touch 12v on it to hear the choke pull up

One wire is Start/selenoid so touch 12v on it to hear the starter going

accessories connect to the A post

FROM A with a ohm meter find the B+ post which is the ONLY one connected to A with the key at the ON position see diagrams above

after finding A ... find the " other post " internally joined (connected) to B+ when pushing the key to CHOKE that will identify the C post (Choke) see diagram

switch designs can vary so you need to physically establish the switching desing pattern and connect proper wires to each screw post.

sorry can't do much more at this end.
