I have a 1989 Evinrude 30hp that has a gas leak somewhere. Every year the engine gets degreased and after a month it is covered in oil and oil is running down the leg of the motor. I cant find the leak to save my life! When I originally got the motor the line on the primer solenoid was broken off. I replaced the front plate and the nub the blocks one port. I thought that was the issue. I still had the issue. Now I am thinking it could be a cracked gas line. I plan on replacing all the fuel lines but my marina is closed so sourcing the odd sized lines is difficult. Someone should sell premade fuel line replacement kits for these older OMC motors that have the odd sizes! I noticed that the throat of the carb always has some oil in it. Could the issue be a float issue and its leaking out the throat? Here’s a pic of the throat after coming out of winter storage.

Pic appears normal. Leaks are not hard to find usually.

1. Tilt motor so it is just slightly tilted. Just enough to give that carb throat a slight downward angle. Maybe a piece of board wedged in if you dont have trim and tilt.

2. Squeeze bulb til firm. Continue applying light pressure to bulb after its firm. While doing so look for drips along lines, at tees, at fittings, etc.

3. Address leaks and go boating.

there will always be some oil that gets on the inside of those motors and collects and drips. They dont have an air silencer that collects it and routes it back into the motor.

I think i found the issue after removing the carb. I found the small 0.05 line that runs from a barb connection on the main head from the bottom of the head to the top head was disconnected at the bottom. I replaced the line with Tygon tubing. I hope that was it!
