My '89 Evinrude 48 SPL has a manual tilt. There is a lever I move and then manually pull up or push down on the motor and then relock it in position with the same lever. Unfortunately, after sitting some time, the tilt seized up. I cannot really see in the area of the tilt due to the motor, but I managed to remove the cable connecting the lever, and it will not move. I don't think it is the cable, but what the cable is connected to. Any ideas.

Also, the steering cable broke because the ram bar (don't know the technical name) is also seized up. How do I get the cable and this bar loose. I've tried PB Blaster, but no help.

This is a good motor, but it just has a couple of issues from sitting. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. One last question, any idea what size or model of steering cable I need. The boat is a 15' Sunbird 150SPL.

Thanks as always for your help!

you have to drive the rod out of the tilt tube, you may have to remove the motor from the boat, to clear up the tilt problem.

Re: 1989 Evinrude 48 SPL manual tilt

I too have a frozen tilt on the same evinrude engine. Mine is electric, and the problem started after a buddy grounded the motor on a sand beach. The tilt motor did not raise the engine, and the manual tilt will not work. Tried releasing the pressure screw but the engine will not lift. Don't think it is the tilt motor since it happened so suddenly...how do I check this and how hard is it to remove the rod from the tilt tube? Do I have to remove the engine?
