Hello All,

Dad has an 89 50hp rude. It used to be VRO, but that had failed on another motor of ours so we put two delete kits on the other one and this one.

This issue started about 2 years ago, and he hasn't dealt with it much since. I'll try and describe everything with the best detail I can.

The motor starts and idles just fine. Just like new. You can run the boat (16' alumn runabout style) thru the entire power range for about 10 minutes. Then once 'warmed up' the motor starts violently jerking/missing whether there is a load on it (in gear) or not (just using throttle) it does it all the time. But you can idle at 1/4 throttle all day long and the motor runs just as good as ever.

My guess (limited knowledge) is that there is a high speed stator that is out of it? My other guess is that this is under the flywheel. This is where another problem starts. We've left a puller on the flywheel for DAYS and kept it lubed with penetrating oil etc, it will not budge, we've smacked it with a hammer (not too much don't want bearing damage), we've even tried a little heat with just a propane soldering torch.

Does it sound like we are on the right track thinking its a stator? Any help with either issue would be EXCELLENT! Thank you!

TRoubleshooting is an organized logical method of working through the systems and finding the problem by elimination, just guessing is expensive.
Leave the stator alone until you track the proglem to stator, which I strongly beleive to be a false trail.

First sort out whether its ignition or fuel delivery.
Put a timing light on the plug wires when it starts acting up to see if its dropping spark, it probably is.

Trace it to the problem coil and swap it with another coil to see if the problem follows the coil. Examine the coil for cracks, replace them all if you find one bad. They'll all soon follow in turns, driving you nuts.:)
Heat failure is common with coils, not fixing it can melt the stator, if you can see any insulation dripping down from the stator its bad too.

agree rarely do stators and pickups fail on those motors. i would check and make sure the fuel hose is connected correctly? arrow on the bulb, pointing toward motor. is the bulb collasping, going flat, when the problem occurs?

on the water, immediately when the problem occurs check the spark on both plugs. also have you check compression on the motor?

Well this def. gives us some more to check.

I will have Dad get a spark tester and begin with that. We've replaced all the fuel lines, rebuilt the carbs, and also have a new fuel delivery line/bulb, along with a new plastic tank.

We both figure that it's ignition issues since we've been thru the fuel system many times trying to find an issue there.

Forgot to mention that the compression is good in both cylinders. We checked it last year, so I can't remember the exact numbers, but comparing to sleds which we are more knowledgeable about they were pretty good and within a lb or two of each other.

He replaced the coil this week and it still does it. He's going to look into the fuel system yet again today. He did notice that the fuel filter doesn't stay full (which is different) the other day when it was running.

Thanks for any more help available.
