Hi, I have a 19' bayliner with 1989 Force 125HP. Yesterday when I was on the water idle in the no wake zone ,the alarm sound off and it got overheated. A good guy with jet ski was kind enought to pull me back to the dock and take a look at the engine. He took off the cover and ask me to start the engine (when the engine cool down ofcause) and we saw the exhuast smoke came out form inside of the engine, it is below the space between the carbs and the power head. He then check the water flow by removing a nut from the top of the power head, we see water shot ot and he ask me to kill the engine. The then put everything back and tell me what he think is happening.

The exhuast smoke leaking inside the engine is being "suck" back to the carb and casuing the engine idle to drop to very low and there is not enought pressure to "push" the water to cool down the engine. He show me after putting on the cover, I can see the water comming out of the two holes ant the back is just a little(much lesser then before). he then open the cover and let the exhaust smoke out and I can see the water comming out have increase in volume and the engine temp went down. He told me that I need to get the exhuast fix and the problem should go away. And he also told me that I can use the boat without the engine cover for the time being and it will not overheat. I try it like he said and it did not get over heat.

Anyone knows how do i fix this leak? I cant even see where the leak is........And I still don't understand why will the exhuast smoke cause the overheat? Does this happend to anyone here?

Re: 1989 Force 125 HP overheating

Sounds like you have two separate problems. The motor should not overheat regardless of RPM....even at the lowest speed. First thing to look at is the water pump impeller.

Exhaust leaking into the cowl area is most commonly caused by a leaking exhaust boot. See item 5 in the diagram below.

Make sure the boot is OK.

If it drops the idle low enough to overheat, the impeller needs to be changed.
There is a gasket under the powerhead.Needs to be changed.
Can be done with regular hand tools a tree a come along and a couple of pry bars.
You should change the impeller FIRST if your gonna use it..
You can run it without the cowl but change the impeller.

The boot is ok, the leak is from arround 32,33 area. can't pin point as the smoke is covering it.

Do i need to remove the whold engine head to change the gasket?
