the engine runs great however when i go to put it into gear it hangs. After some troubleshooting i have discovered the root of this problem but have questions about the solution. attached to the arm that advances the timing there is a fitting (for lack of a better word) its got a 90 degree bend and meets up with the linkage towards the lower unit, these two meet up and there is the resistance, i can take pics if it will help...i can manually put it in forward gear but cannot with the cables hooked up....any ideas?

There are 2 nuts that you will have to move. They are mounted at the top of the shifter shaft.

They connect the shifter shaft to the part you mention.

After doing that you will likely have to remove the gearcase and reset the shifter down there.

TMD
