Re: 1989 Force 125 water pump Question

RJA, your water pump is telling you to change me. The water is commin out of the right holes, and normally at that. But it shouldn't overheat in idle. This is a sign the water pump is not seating on the pump body walls at low speed. They work like a positive displacement type in idle, then,at high speed, the rubber blades are designed to "tuck-in",thus it acts like a centrifugal pump.
Hope this helps, and good luck with it.

------------------
the Early bird get's the worm...So, he don't have to stop for bait.

RJA, when a water pump starts gettin weak, it will overheat at idle just like yours is doing....you will need to replace the impeller and quite possibly the water pump housing to get your cooling system back up to par....

The impeller is only around 20buks. The job is not too hard. It wil take you all day the first time,1 hour the next time you do it.
It's also a good idea to inspect the pump body for corrosion while you got it down.
With the mechanic's tools and the knowlage you have, you only need to read the book first, and have it handy durring the job.
But about as complicated as front disc brake job on a toyota....Easy once you've done it once.

------------------
the Early bird get's the worm...So, he don't have to stop for bait.

Re: 1989 Force 125 water pump Question

I have my pump changed last year. The dealer charged me 2.5 hrs x $70 = $175 for the labor and $50 for whole pump including body and thermostat. My engine is Force 120 L-drive though.

12Footer, should I remove the entire lower case to change the pump? How heavy is it? Can one person without tools can handle it?
I can change my brake pads in one hour, so I should be able to change the pump next time.

Thanks in advance.

Re: 1989 Force 125 water pump Question

RJA,
Replacing the water pump is really quite easy. Just a couple of pointers as you go.
Make sure you disconnect the shift rod when dropping the lower unit. If you "forget " this step, you may end up bending it. Second,
When you remove the lower unit bolts, make sure you get the one thats under the exhaust fin. It took me a little head scratching to locate that one. (I had an 87 model and I believe the 89's were similar. I'm not sure exactly what year they were acquired by mercury). Lastly, make sure you check the direction of the fins on the old impellor before you remove it. If you get it in backwards, it wont work right and you'll have to disassemble the lower unit again.

These are just a few "common sense" pointers, but if your new to the process, they can releive a lot of headaches.

Have fun.

You will need tools.
A good 3/8 socket set
Needle nose pliers
srewdriver
rubber mallet (if not available,a ball peen
hammer).
A small drift pin punch (or 16p nail will work).
And i think that's about it. And no,it's not heavy. You have to drop the lower case, but the lower case only weighs 15lbs or so.
I would, however, advise you to get the shop manual for that engine. It'll pay for itself in less than a season, and you'll be able to do better preventive maintainance, and your engine will last longer.

------------------
the Early bird get's the worm...So, he don't have to stop for bait.
