Hi all. My frst post. I have learned alot from this forum over the past month. I just bought a 1989 Quantam 19.5' Fish & Ski with a 150 Force and trailer for $200.00 - I feel like I got a good deal, if not a steal. This is my first boat. The stainless steel prop is probably worth more than I paid for the whole rig. The floor has some soft spots but not too bad. Bought a new battery and put the lower unit in a giant trash can full of water to test it out. I checked the fuel and it smelled like varnish so I drained the 37 gallon fuel tank but was scared to waste fresh gas in it so I baught a 6 gallon plastic tank, pint of TWC3 and 6 gallons of gas. I dropped all three bowls off the carberators and cleaned them, pumped fresh gas through the carbs, replaced the bowls. Crossed my fingers and tried to start it. To my syrprise it fired right up ran rough for a few seconds the smoothed out. Very surprised and pleased. I then Baxterized it with a telltale that I learned from this sight. The water stream seemed very week so after reading all the information about impellers I decided to drop the lower unit and check it. The impellor was cracked with torn spots but the housing looked good. My problem now is that water was getting into the lower unit where the shift rod goes through. There is a small rubber gasket that the rod goes through at the front of the lower unit that looks like the minature version of a rubber seal around car stick shift. I looked at photos of seal kits but they do not show this one part. Mine has a bad split. Any idea what this rubber part is or is it made into the hole plate? Where do I get a new one or any idea how to repair split rubber?

Congratulations, sounds like you are doing all the right things, getting it ready first, instead of just dropping it in the water and getting stranded.

the stream out of your new tell tale is not strong at all anyway, you can actually hold the stream back just by holding your finger over the hole I would guess it to be only around 7 psi or so, but obviously did the right thing in replacing the impeller.

Make sure you change the LU gear lube also with new washers.
you should be able to have a local merc dealer get that part for you, would save you on shipping for a 5 dollar part. Give them the part number Roscoe posted above
