1989 Force 85....runs great BUT stuck in gear

I havent been on the forum for quite some time so if I post a question in the wrong section,forgive me as I just got another boat and I'm sure to get back in the swing of the site.

The engine is on a 1989 Bayliner and runs absolutly great but at when returning back to the dock yesterday,I couldnt get it to go back out of forward gear.It still starts and runs fine it just will not come out of gear.If I go into the reverse position,everything works as normal but still goes forward.Basicly it does nothing,or makes no sounds from forward to reverse.I did check the cables and all are hooked up and working......could it be stuck in gear?I havent done anything to it at all......where should I start?

If you can start it, it sounds like the linkages are moving as far as the neutral safety switch.

The next place to check is forward and just above the lower unit. This is where the shift lever comes out of the gear case. There is a coupler there with a cotter pin that goes through the shift rod. If this linkage came apart, you will not be able to shift.

If the linkage is OK there. Have someone shift the boat and make sure the linkages are moving. If not, you should be able to trace the problem pretty easily.

once in a while my shift lever bolt will come loose and the shifter will not go back into neutral,have to pull the small emblem off the shift lever and tighten it down. Two cents worth,

Thanks for the replys guys,I will tell you where I'm at now.I had a friend got from forward and reverse and all linkages are hooked up and working.I'm thinking now its somthing a but more serious or complacated to fix anyway.Any suggestions as to where I look now?
